All the “all inclusive resorts” will tell you that tipping is included. That is how it is supposed to be. But is it really that way? Let’s take a look. I will illustrate with a story.

I went to an all inclusive resort for the first time about 12 years ago. I read all the brochures and took in all the information. You will be fed all day every day, all your drinks are included among a bunch of other stuff. So here is what I learned.

When first getting there we wanted to hit the bar for a drink after a long flight there. Everything was fine as we have just arrived. During the day and at night we made frequent trips to the same bar with the same bartenders. Now we have not tipped anyone. What we found was that if there were a lot of people at the bar, those that had tipped and/or were tipping got better service and quicker service. They also got noticed right away among all the people too.

After seeing this we started tipping too. It was not a lot. Maybe one to three dollars here and there. Maybe after every second round. I will tell you this. We never had to wait for a drink for the rest of the time we were there. Another thing is that word will travel among the resort employees. The rest of the week we would be on the beach and have someone come up to us asking if they could get a drink and deliver it. Not getting up to go to the bar while sitting on the beach in the sun, Priceless. What a difference a few dollars can make.

This also goes for the handling of your luggage at the resort too. By parting with a few dollars at the beginning of our stay to the bell boy, it was amazing what it got us. When it was time to leave at 4:30 am. the bell boy was there, right on time.

Room service is also included in the “all inclusive fee”. One night our girls went out clubbing, all three of them. The next day they all had hangovers. They ordered room service 8 times during the day. A few dollars for the first trip and they never had to wait more than 30 minutes to get what they ordered. Of course another reason was that they were 20, 19 and 18. There was no shortage of people trying to pick them up either.
